Floods submerge six panchayats in Patna’s Danapur

Patna, Aug 8 — Rising water levels in the Ganga and Son rivers have triggered severe flooding in Bihar’s Patna district, inundating six panchayats in the lower Danapur Diara region and forcing mass migration of residents to safer areas, officials and locals said on Thursday.

Floodwaters have entered hundreds of homes in low-lying areas, disconnecting entire villages from the district headquarters. Boats have become the only means of transportation, with many villagers paying steep rates — up to ₹1,000 per animal — to reach safer ground.

Among the worst-affected areas are Panapur, Manas, Old Panapur, Hetanpur, and Patalapur, where floodwaters have submerged standing crops and rendered people homeless. Many families have taken shelter in relief camps set up in Danapur city, while others continue to wait for help.

“The situation is dire. There is no clean drinking water, no food, and no fodder for animals,” said a local resident. “People are migrating with children and livestock, yet no concrete arrangements for boats, health services, or animal aid have been made by the administration.”

Locals allege that despite the escalating crisis, the district administration has failed to respond adequately, leaving them to fend for themselves. “It feels like the government has abandoned us,” said another villager, echoing the growing frustration on the ground.

Authorities have yet to issue a formal statement on the situation in Danapur Diara. Relief efforts are underway, but affected villagers say much more is needed — urgently — as the water levels continue to rise and conditions worsen.
