ROHTAK, Dec 14— Two people were killed and at least 24 others injured after dense fog triggered a massive chain collision involving more than 30 vehicles on National Highway-152D near Kharkara village in Rohtak district on Sunday morning, police said.
The accident occurred around 8 a.m. under Meham sub-division when low visibility led to multiple vehicles ramming into each other, disrupting traffic on the busy highway for over two hours.
Subhash, station house officer of Meham police station, confirmed the fatalities. “Two persons lost their lives in the accident, while over 24 others, including women and children, were injured and taken to different hospitals,” he said.
The deceased were identified as Ashish, 30, a resident of Charkhi Dadri, and Sohan Lal, 35, from Jind. Police said Ashish was travelling in a car that crashed into a truck from behind due to poor visibility, setting off a chain reaction involving several vehicles.
“The impact was extremely severe. Vehicles kept colliding one after another, which is common in fog-related accidents,” a police official said.
Residents of Kharkara village were among the first responders, helping rescue people trapped inside damaged vehicles. Injured victims were transported to government hospitals in Meham and PGIMS, Rohtak, using police jeeps and private vehicles.
“There was no ambulance available initially. We informed the police and toll staff and helped take the injured to hospitals,” said a local resident.
Police have registered a case against an unidentified truck driver following a complaint filed by Ashish’s parents. Authorities have urged motorists to slow down and maintain safe distances during foggy conditions.
