Panchkula, Feb 5:  Panchkula city traffic police distributed more than 100 free helmets to two-wheeler riders as part of a targeted road safety campaign at Geeta Chowk. The initiative, conducted in partnership with SBI General Insurance, focused on riders found traveling without head protection and aimed to instill safer commuting habits among local residents.

DCP (Traffic) Manpreet Singh Sudan noted that head injuries remain the primary cause of fatalities in road accidents.

He said that while wearing a helmet is a legal requirement, its primary value lies in its life-saving potential.

“Most road accident deaths occur due to head injuries,” Sudan said, while mentioning that the drive was a proactive step toward reducing such casualties.

During the event, traffic officials and representatives from SBI General Insurance sensitized commuters about the necessity of complying with traffic regulations. Senior insurance officials, including Priyanka Sampat Kumar and ML Das, mentioned their commitment to supporting future road safety programs in the city.

City traffic police SHO Varinder Kumar noted that the objective was to change the public’s mindset regarding safety gear. He said that helmets should be viewed as a personal protective measure rather than a tool to avoid police penalties.

“The public should wear helmets not just to avoid fines, but to protect their lives,” Kumar said.

The drive received a positive response from the community, with many riders pledging to follow traffic rules consistently. The police department noted that similar awareness campaigns will continue across busy intersections to ensure better compliance and road safety.
