Free tent cities draw praise

ANANDPUR SAHIB, November 24 — Thousands of devotees attending the 350th martyrdom commemoration of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib in Anandpur Sahib have been accommodated in three temporary tent cities set up by the Punjab government, which officials say are operating free of cost and round the clock. The elaborate camping facilities, constructed specifically for visiting pilgrims, include accommodation, transport links and medical support.

Officials said each site has been designed to withstand winter temperatures and host a large footfall of devotees. “We wanted people to feel comfortable and safe regardless of the weather,” an official overseeing the arrangements noted, adding that warm mattresses and blankets have been provided in every tent.

Visitors described the effort as unprecedented. Pilgrims reported clean bedding, electricity and adequate lighting, as well as toilet and bathing facilities. Free drinking water stations and on-site maintenance teams were also deployed to respond to any inconvenience.

Authorities added that transportation to the main shrine has been made fully complimentary through an internal shuttle service of e-rickshaws and buses running every few minutes. “No devotee should face difficulty reaching the Gurdwara,” a volunteer said.

The government has stationed medical teams inside the camps, including doctors, paramedics and emergency supplies, along with 24-hour support for the elderly and children. Organizers said hot meals were being served at the langar throughout the day.

Police personnel and volunteers have been stationed to provide security. CCTV systems have been installed throughout the camp areas. Officers said dedicated safety measures for women and children are also in place.

Many devotees said the arrangement counters the common perception that free facilities lack quality. “This feels like a well-managed lodging, not a temporary shelter,” one pilgrim remarked, while others said the hospitality had exceeded expectations.

Officials maintained that the government intends to ensure a smooth and respectful experience for every attendee.
