From Tariffs to Taj: Vance’s India Tour Begins

NEW DELHI, April 22– Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance on Monday night reviewed progress on a proposed India-US bilateral trade agreement during talks at the PM’s residence.

The two leaders welcomed “significant progress” in ongoing negotiations aimed at addressing tariffs and market access, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Vance, accompanied by his wife Usha and their three children, arrived in New Delhi earlier in the day and was received by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

He inspected a ceremonial guard of honour before heading to the Akshardham temple, where he wrote in the visitor’s book: “Our kids, in particular, loved it. God bless.”

Talks between Modi and Vance also touched on energy, defence and strategic technologies. According to sources, both sides reiterated the need for “dialogue and diplomacy” on global conflicts — a reference to the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.

Vance has publicly opposed continued US funding to Ukraine.

Modi extended greetings to US President Donald Trump and said he looked forward to welcoming him later this year for the Quad summit in India. Trump had earlier imposed and then paused sweeping tariffs on 60 countries, including India.

Vance, the first US Vice President to visit India since Joe Biden in 2013, will leave for Jaipur on Monday night.

He is scheduled to visit Amer Fort, address the Rajasthan International Centre, and then travel to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal on Wednesday.
