MUKTSAR , Dec 29— The panchayat of Ghagga village in Muktsar district has passed a resolution to socially boycott people who support offenders or stand surety for their bail, including a fine of Rs 50,000, officials said. The move comes amid rising incidents of theft, snatching, and drug-related activities.
Ravinder Kaur, sarpanch of Ghagga, said, “With the onset of winter, cases of theft, particularly of water motors from fields, have sharply increased. The panchayat has unanimously decided to socially boycott those who support or stand surety for individuals involved in thefts, snatchings, or drug-peddling activities, along with imposing a fine of Rs 50,000.”
Earlier, the Shamkhera village panchayat in Muktsar had warned drug peddlers to mend their ways, passing a resolution stating anyone found selling drugs would face consequences solely, with no intervention from other villagers. Similarly, Balloh village in Bathinda district banned the sale of tobacco products, with violators liable for a fine of Rs 5,000.
