Bikaner, 19 February —A 17-year-old gold medalist in powerlifting died after a 270-kg barbell fell on her neck during practice at a gym in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district, police said Wednesday.
Yashtika Acharya suffered fatal injuries on Tuesday when the bar slipped and crushed her neck, Naya Shahar SHO Vikram Tiwari said. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The accident occurred while her trainer was assisting her with the lift, Tiwari added. The trainer sustained minor injuries.
Authorities confirmed the family had not filed a complaint. After a post-mortem, her body was handed over to the family on Wednesday.
