New Delhi, 27 December 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his predecessor, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, calling it a monumental loss for the nation. “Dr Singh’s demise is a significant loss for the nation,” Modi stated in a video message, reflecting on Singh’s remarkable journey and enduring contributions to India’s development.

Modi highlighted Singh’s resilience in overcoming hardships, particularly the tragedy of Partition, which shaped his life and values. “Dr Singh was an achiever despite having lost much after coming to India during Partition. His life teaches future generations to rise above adversity and achieve great heights,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister commended Singh’s lasting legacy as a distinguished economist and leader. Recalling Singh’s pivotal role as Finance Minister under PV Narasimha Rao, Modi said, “He guided the country out of a financial crisis and onto a new economic path. As prime minister, his commitment to the nation’s progress and development will always be remembered.”

Singh’s tenure as the Reserve Bank of India Governor and his integrity in governance were also praised by Modi, who described his life as a testament to humility, honesty, and simplicity. “Even in his final Rajya Sabha term earlier this year, Dr Singh’s dedication was evident. Despite physical challenges, he continued to attend key sessions in a wheelchair, fulfilling his parliamentary responsibilities,” the Prime Minister noted.

Recalling personal interactions, Modi said Singh maintained relationships across party lines and was accessible to all. “He never forgot his humble beginnings, despite his global education and high-ranking positions. I fondly remember our discussions on national and international issues during my time as chief minister and later in Delhi.”

Modi extended condolences to Singh’s family and paid tributes on behalf of all citizens. The Prime Minister later visited Singh’s residence at Motilal Nehru Marg to pay his respects in person.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also paid homage to the late leader.

Singh’s cremation is scheduled for Saturday.
