BATALA, May 17: Tension gripped Batala town on Saturday after a hand grenade was found outside a newly opened liquor shop operated by the Rimple Group at the focal point area. Fortunately, the grenade did not explode and was recovered safely by the police, averting any potential tragedy.

The suspicious device was discovered at the entrance of the Rimple Group’s new outlet. Authorities quickly cordoned off the area and called in bomb disposal experts to secure the grenade.

According to officials, the attack has been claimed by two foreign-based operatives, Manu Agwan and Gopi Navanshahriyan. A social media post taking responsibility for the act has surfaced and is now in the possession of the police.

“We have recorded the statement of the contractor and are investigating the matter thoroughly,” a senior police officer said. “The recovery of the grenade and the claim of responsibility are being treated with utmost seriousness. Security measures have been heightened in the area.”

An FIR has been registered and further probe is underway to trace the individuals behind the attempt. The police are also examining the authenticity of the online claim and any possible links to overseas networks.

This is the latest in a series of incidents pointing to the increasing attempts by external groups to spread fear through targeted attacks in Punjab.
