Pune, 12 February 2025: A 53-year-old patient admitted to Mumbai’s Nair Hospital died of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner confirmed Wednesday. With this, the number of deaths linked to the rare neurological disorder in Maharashtra has risen to eight.

According to the Maharashtra Health Department, 192 suspected GBS cases have been recorded as of February 11, with 172 confirmed.

“Most cases are concentrated in Pune and surrounding areas,” a health official said. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reported 40 cases, while 92 have emerged from newly added villages.

Pimpri Chinchwad has recorded 29 cases, Pune Rural 28, and eight cases have surfaced in other districts.

Of the confirmed cases, 104 patients have been discharged, while 50 remain in intensive care, including 20 on ventilators.

Authorities have linked the outbreak to contaminated water, prompting the PMC to seal 30 private water supply plants in Nanded, Dhayari, and outer areas of Sinhgad village.

“Water samples from these plants were found unfit for drinking, with some containing high levels of Escherichia coli,” a PMC official said.

Several plants lacked operational permits, while others failed to use disinfectants or chlorine to prevent contamination.

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda reviewed the outbreak response in a meeting with Maharashtra’s health and medical ministers, discussing ongoing efforts to contain the disease.
