CHANDIGARH, Oct. 25 — Three-time legislator Harvinder Kalyan has been elected as the Speaker of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha in an uncontested vote Friday. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini proposed Kalyan’s name, which was promptly seconded by Minister Ranbir Gangwa. With no other nominees, Pro-tem Speaker Rabhuvir Kadian officially declared Kalyan the unanimous choice for the Speaker’s role.

Kalyan, a representative of the Gharaunda Assembly constituency in Karnal, has served as MLA for three terms. Notably, Karnal remains unrepresented in the Saini cabinet, which was sworn in on October 17. A prominent member of the OBC Rod community, Kalyan was previously bypassed for ministerial positions in both the current and previous administrations led by former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

As Speaker, Kalyan now occupies a key role in the state’s legislative framework, despite having missed out on a ministerial post.
