Chandigarh, Dec 15: The Haryana government on Sunday divested Shatrujeet Kapur, a 1990-batch IPS officer, of the charge of Director General of Police (DGP), official orders stated. OP Singh, a 1992-batch IPS officer who was holding additional charge during Kapur’s leave, has been appointed as the officiating DGP until further orders.
Kapur, who took charge as DGP on August 16, 2023, for a minimum tenure of two years under the Supreme Court’s landmark Prakash Singh verdict, had completed his two-year term. He could have continued in office until his retirement in October 2026.
The divestment follows orders issued by the Home Department to create a vacancy in anticipation of appointing a new DGP from January 1, 2026. Kapur will continue to serve as chairman of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation.
“Kapur stands divested of the charge of DGP, but will retain his other responsibilities,” said Additional Chief Secretary Sumita Misra, issuing the December 14 orders. Kapur had proceeded on leave in October amid pressure following the suicide of fellow IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, after which OP Singh was given additional charge.
The state government has initiated the process for the next DGP by sending a proposal of five IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for empanelment. The list includes Kapur along with Sanjeev Kumar Jain, Ajay Singhal, Alok Mittal, and Arshinder Chawla.
