Chandigarh, May 14: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed Punjab Police to refrain from unnecessarily harassing Leader of Opposition and Congress MLA Partap Singh Bajwa during the investigation of an FIR registered against him for his controversial statement about “50 bombs” entering the state.
Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya issued the directive after Bajwa’s counsel, senior advocate APS Deol, alleged in court that the police were making unreasonable demands, including records of phones and SIM cards used by the MLA over the last two years.
Deol contended that the information sought had no bearing on the investigation.
The state government, however, argued that the data was vital to the ongoing probe.
“The investigation must proceed in accordance with legal procedure,” the judge observed, while adjourning the hearing to May 22.
Bajwa has filed a petition seeking to quash the FIR registered against him in Mohali on April 13.
The case accuses him of spreading false and provocative information after he claimed that 50 grenades had reached Punjab—an assertion he allegedly failed to substantiate with any evidence.
The FIR was lodged under charges related to disturbing public peace.
