Faridabad, Feb 8: A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the mechanical failure that led to a fatal joyride collapse at the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Festival. While the fair remains open to the public, the amusement zone has been closed indefinitely as a precautionary measure.
Faridabad Deputy Commissioner Ayush Sinha and Tourism Director Parth Gupta inspected the fairgrounds on Sunday to review security arrangements. They noted that the administration is on high alert to prevent further incidents. A committee headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner Satbir Singh is currently examining technical reports and maintenance logs.
Faridabad police spokesperson Yashpal said that the investigation led to the arrest of the proprietor of the swing company and a staff member. He mentioned that the authorities are scrutinizing the roles of all individuals involved in the installation and operation of the ride.
The fair began on Sunday with a two-minute silence to pay tribute to Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who sacrificed his life during the rescue operation. Officials noted that the inspector was only two months away from retirement.
“While investigating, the SIT arrested two accused. Mohammad Shakir… proprietor of Himachal Fun Care… and another accused Nitesh,” the spokesperson said. He mentioned that of the 12 injured, five have already been discharged from the hospital.
The district administration clarified that all other sections of the festival, including the craft stalls and food courts, are operating safely. “The safety of tourists and the general public is the top priority of the administration and the fair authority,” a statement from the Fair Authority noted.
