SHIMLA, June 26 — Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday announced that a dedicated chapter on drug abuse awareness would soon be introduced in the state’s school curriculum as part of an intensified campaign to combat narcotics use.

Presiding over a state-level function on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Chief Minister called upon all sections of society to contribute to making Himachal Pradesh a drug-free state.

“The vision of a prosperous country can only be realised by channelising the energy of the youth in the right direction,” Sukhu said, reaffirming his government’s zero tolerance policy against drug use and trafficking.

Taking a strong stance against internal corruption, Sukhu warned that strict action would be taken against any government employees found involved in drug trafficking.

As part of the state’s rehabilitation efforts, the Chief Minister also announced the establishment of a 100-bedded, fully equipped de-addiction centre in Kotla Barog, Sirmaur district, with a budget of ₹5.34 crore. “The construction work is expected to begin later this year,” he added.

Sukhu said the government also aims to set up de-addiction centres in every district to improve access to treatment and support for those battling substance abuse.

The announcements underscore the state’s push for both preventive education and strong enforcement, as authorities attempt to tackle rising drug concerns across Himachal’s urban and rural regions.
