Himachal faces fresh spell of heavy rain

Shimla, September 10 — Himachal Pradesh is bracing for another spell of heavy rainfall from September 12 to 14, with the meteorological department issuing a series of yellow weather warnings across several districts. The fresh forecast comes as more than 500 roads, including four national highways, remain blocked due to monsoon damage, and hundreds of transformers and water schemes are still disrupted.

According to the Himachal Pradesh Meteorological Department, Una, Bilaspur, and Kangra districts are under a yellow warning for September 12, with thunderstorms and lightning expected in isolated areas. On September 13, the advisory expands to cover Shimla, Mandi, Solan, Sirmaur, Kangra, Una, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur districts, predicting heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning. A further warning has been issued for Kangra, Mandi, Una, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur districts on September 14.

Officials said the continuing wet spell poses serious risks for road connectivity and public utilities already battered by the monsoon. The State Emergency Operation Centre reported that 586 roads remain blocked across the state. Kullu is the worst affected with 216 road closures, including National Highways 3 and 305. Mandi district has 150 roads shut, Shimla 58, Kangra 42, and Sirmaur 28. In Una, 20 roads are blocked, including NH-503A, while Bilaspur has 10 closures, Lahaul and Spiti seven, Kinnaur three including NH-5, and Hamirpur three.

The downpour has also damaged power infrastructure. Out of 571 disrupted transformers, 439 are in Kullu district alone. Lahaul and Spiti account for 51 outages, Shimla 46, Chamba 27, and Mandi eight. Many areas remain without steady electricity supply as repairs continue.

Water availability has also been severely hit. The government confirmed that 378 water supply schemes are disrupted across Himachal. These include 176 in Kangra, 108 in Shimla, 52 in Mandi, 25 in Chamba, six in Kullu, and five each in Solan and Sirmaur, while Lahaul and Spiti reported one disruption.

Officials noted that the combined impact of blocked roads, damaged transformers, and disrupted water schemes has left residents in several districts struggling with basic connectivity and essential services.

State authorities have urged residents to remain cautious in view of the forecast for continued heavy rain and thunderstorms.
