SHIMLA, Sept 21 — The Himachal Pradesh High Court has taken cognisance of an environmental concern in Lippa village, Kinnaur, where a lake formed following heavy rainfall on September 4.
Residents alleged that debris and muck discharged by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) blocked two nullahs, leading to the accumulation of water and formation of the lake. A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia and Justice Ranjan Sharma, treated the residents’ letter as a public interest litigation (PIL) and issued notices to the authorities, including HPPCL.
The court directed the Deputy Commissioner of Kinnaur to take urgent measures to address the situation. Authorities have been asked to submit a status report by October 16.
The development comes amid increasing concerns over the ecological impact of unregulated discharge and debris management in the state’s sensitive hill regions.
