Shimla, Dec 15: Two second-year MBBS students at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, have been suspended for three months following a hostel-based ragging incident, the college said on Sunday. Both students were also fined ₹50,000 each.

The action came on the recommendation of the college disciplinary committee, formed after the hostel warden filed a complaint of ragging. Dr. Jagjeet Singh Chahal, nodal officer of IGMC’s anti-ragging committee, said, “The two second-year students were found involved in ragging of three junior students. Action has been taken and the two accused have been fined ₹50,000 each along with a warning for the future.”

According to officials, the incident occurred three to four days ago when senior students allegedly called juniors to the hostel in violation of norms. Junior students are not permitted to enter or stay in hostels until accommodation is formally allotted.

An internal inquiry found that the episode did not amount to “grave ragging” but constituted a serious breach of discipline. “The disciplinary committee examined all aspects of the matter and recommended suspension and a monetary penalty,” a member of the committee said on condition of anonymity.

The rooms involved were inspected, and the committee warned that future violations would invite stricter action. A senior doctor added that CCTV footage and anti-ragging surveillance helped identify the incident.
