New Delhi, 13 November 2025 – Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Income Tax Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, calling for it to be referred to a select committee of the House. Despite objections from opposition members, the House approved its introduction through a voice vote.

Congress MP Manish Tewari, RSP MP NK Premachandran, and TMC MP Sougata Roy opposed the Bill at the introduction stage. However, Sitharaman dismissed their objections as untenable.

She requested Speaker Om Birla to determine the committee’s composition and rules, noting that the panel is expected to submit its report by the first day of the next session.

The proposed legislation aims to simplify tax-related language by replacing terms such as “assessment year” and “previous year” with “tax year” while removing complex provisos and explanations.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until March 10, marking the end of the first part of the Budget session.

Speaker Birla noted that the session recorded 112 percent productivity, with 173 MPs speaking for over 17 hours during the Motion of Thanks debate and 170 members participating in the 16-hour discussion on the budget. The second part of the session will run from March 10 to April 4.
