IND vs ENG: After Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the Test captain of the Indian team. He will be seen leading the team in the five-match Test series against England. However, former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwari has raised questions on this decision of the selection committee. He said that Gill did not even have a place in the playing 11, despite this he was made the captain.
His place was not even in the playing 11′
Former cricketer Manoj Tiwari said on Cricbuzz- ‘He was the second best option. But how can a person who does not even fit in the playing XI be made the captain? So I think the logic here was that they saw who was the second best option, and that was Gill, and that is what happened.’
Sehwag supported the decision of the selectors
Sehwag was also present during this discussion. He supported the decision of the selectors. During this, he also mentioned Bumrah and Pant. He said- ‘Bumrah is fine for one series. But as a long-term option you need to ask if India plays 10 Tests a year, will he be able to play all those matches? Or how many matches can he play? This is a major factor in choosing a captain. So I think it was the right decision, because they felt they could not put that pressure and load on Bumrah.’
Sehwag said that Bumrah was at the forefront in the race for captaincy. He was followed by Rishabh Pant in second place and Shubman Gill in third place. He further said- ‘Tiwari (Manoj) said that Gill is the second best, but I think he is Rishabh Pant and Gill is the third best.’
Gill made his Test debut in Australia
Gill made his Test debut in 2020-21 on the Australia tour. He played a brilliant innings of 91 runs in the Test at the Gabba. By winning this match, Ajinkya Rahane’s Team India took an unassailable 2-1 lead over Australia. Since then, Gill has scored 1893 runs in 32 Tests at an average of 35.03. This includes five centuries and seven half-centuries. During this, he has hit 210 fours and 31 sixes. However, Gill’s record outside India has not been anything special. Especially in England, Gill has not been able to do anything special. He has also played two World Test Championship finals there. In three matches in England, he has scored 88 runs at an average of less than 15. In Australia, Gill has represented India in six Tests and scored 352 runs at an average of 35.20.
