New Delhi, April 02: Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has signaled a potential thaw in India-China relations, stating there is an opportunity “to rebuild India-China ties” while stressing that peace along the border remains essential for progress.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, Misri acknowledged the “difficult phase” following the prolonged military stand-off in Eastern Ladakh but noted that several border issues have been resolved. He outlined a three-fold approach—mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interests—as the foundation for rebuilding ties.

“The path forward may be difficult, but we are prepared to walk that path,” he said.

Misri also referenced the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, as a step toward stability. He accentuated ongoing discussions on resuming river cooperation, direct air services, and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong echoed the call for strengthened ties, emphasizing that differences should not turn into disputes. “Bridging differences through dialogue is the ‘one and only key’ to China-India relations,” Xu said, citing President Xi’s vision for peaceful coexistence and mutual benefit.

Misri described recent developments as “promising beginnings” and stressed the need to translate diplomatic efforts into tangible benefits for both nations.
