Kuala Lumpur, Feb 8: A new era of bilateral cooperation in semiconductor manufacturing and maritime defense has been established between India and Malaysia following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Kuala Lumpur.
The visit, marked by a ceremonial welcome at Perdana Putra, focused on leveraging the historical ties between the two maritime neighbors to build modern economic infrastructure.
The Prime Minister talked about the deep cultural roots that connect the two nations, noting that Malaysia currently hosts the second-largest population of Indian origin globally.
“India and Malaysia share a special relationship. We are maritime neighbours. For centuries, our people have had deep and affectionate ties,” Modi said.
He added that shared cultural heritage and democratic values continue to bind the two civilizations together.
In a direct address regarding international security, the Prime Minister noted that there is no room for ambiguity when dealing with extremist threats.
“Our message on terrorism is clear; no double standards, no compromise,” he said. This commitment is expected to manifest through increased cooperation in counter-terrorism and maritime security operations.
The economic agenda of the meeting noted a significant move toward high-tech manufacturing. Modi mentioned that the partnership would move forward with a focus on semiconductors and artificial intelligence to ensure future food and health security.
Prime Minister Ibrahim welcomed the strengthening of these ties, noting the importance of India’s economic trajectory. Ibrahim said India and Malaysia continue to expand collaboration in trade, investment, connectivity and defense.
He noted the “spectacular rise” of India’s economic presence, suggesting that the expanded partnership would benefit the broader Indo-Pacific region.
