New Delhi, Feb 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his best wishes to BNP leader Tarique Rahman following a sweeping victory in the Bangladesh parliamentary polls. In a telephonic exchange on Friday, the Prime Minister noted that the electoral success demonstrates the trust the Bangladeshi public has placed in Rahman’s leadership.
The BNP is currently on track for a landslide win, ending twenty years in the political wilderness. This transition comes after a turbulent phase in Bangladesh’s history, characterized by a fragile security situation and student-led protests that reshaped the national landscape in 2024.
“I conveyed my best wishes and support in his endeavour to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh,” Prime Minister Modi noted.
While the BNP has secured the majority of seats, reports indicate that the Jamaat-e-Islami is also leading in approximately 75 constituencies. Amidst this changing political climate, India has reaffirmed its role as a steady partner in the region’s progress.
“As two close neighbours with deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to peace,” the Prime Minister mentioned.
The Prime Minister further noted that he looks forward to working closely with the new administration to achieve common developmental objectives. The dialogue signals a move toward maintaining bilateral stability as the new government prepares to take office in Dhaka.
