NEW DELHI, JAN 12: Assuming charge on Monday, the new US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, announced that India will be invited to join PaxSilica—a high-stakes strategic initiative aimed at securing the global semiconductor and silicon supply chain. The invitation, set for next month, would place India alongside an elite group of nations including Japan, South Korea, the UK, and Israel.

The announcement comes at a critical juncture as bilateral trade remains under pressure from heavy tariffs on Indian goods, a portion of which is a punitive measure for New Delhi’s purchase of Russian crude oil. Addressing the friction, Gor emphasized the depth of the diplomatic bond, stating, “Real friends can disagree, but they always resolve their differences.” He confirmed that fresh trade negotiations are scheduled to resume as early as Tuesday.

“India is the world’s largest nation, so it’s not an easy task to get this across the finish line,” Gor remarked, referring to the stalled trade deal. He described the partnership as the most consequential global partnership of this century and highlighted the personal rapport between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Beyond trade, the Ambassador outlined a broad mission covering security, counter-terrorism, and energy. He also shared optimism regarding a future presidential visit, noting his hope that President Trump would visit India within the next year or two to further cement ties between the world’s oldest and largest democracies.
