Ottawa, April 5: An Indian national was stabbed to death in Rockland, a community about 40 kilometers east of Ottawa, Canadian police and the Indian Embassy confirmed on Saturday.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to reports of an incident near Lalonde Street shortly before 3 p.m. Friday. Though initial local media reports described it as a shooting, the Indian Embassy stated that the victim died as a result of stabbing.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of an Indian national in Rockland near Ottawa, due to stabbing,” the embassy said in a statement posted on X. “Police have stated that a suspect has been taken into custody. We are in close contact through a local community association to provide all possible assistance to the bereaved kin.”
Authorities have not yet identified the victim or confirmed the specific charges being considered against the suspect.
The Indian Embassy added that it remains in touch with local authorities and is offering support to the victim’s family. Further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident are still awaited.
