Burnaby, Jan 25: A 28-year-old man of Indian origin was killed in a targeted shooting in Burnaby on Thursday evening, in what Canadian authorities believe is a result of ongoing gang rivalries. The victim has been identified as Dilraj Singh Gill, a resident of Vancouver who was previously known to law enforcement.
The incident occurred just before 5:30 p.m. near the 3700 block of Canada Way. Burnaby RCMP officers arrived at the scene following reports of gunfire and discovered Gill suffering from critical injuries. Although emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has since assumed control of the case. Investigators noted that the nature of the attack points toward a specific motive within the regional criminal landscape.
“Gill was known to police, and the shooting appears to have a nexus to the BC Gang conflict,” officials said in a formal statement.
Shortly after the shooting was reported, police located a burning vehicle in the 5000 block of Buxton Street. Forensic teams have since confirmed that this vehicle is linked to the homicide. Investigators are currently gathering data on the car’s history and its movements prior to the fire.
Sergeant Freda Fong noted that the brazen nature of the crime has caused significant concern for public safety.
“A shooting, especially in a public place is extremely troubling, not only for the police but for the entire community,” Fong said. “Information from witnesses and those in the area will be crucial in ensuring this investigation advances and to hold those responsible, accountable.”
The investigation is a collaborative effort involving the Burnaby RCMP, the Lower Mainland District Integrated Forensic Identification Service, and the BC Coroners Service. Authorities are specifically seeking dashcam footage or statements from anyone who was in the vicinity of Canada Way or Buxton Street on Thursday afternoon.
