New Delhi, Jan 1: As 2025 came to a close, Indians celebrated the New Year with their favourite comfort food: biryani. Delivery platform Swiggy reported a staggering 1,336 biryani orders per minute even before 8 p.m., with a total of 2,18,993 biryanis ordered by 7:30 p.m.

One party host in Bhubaneswar went all out, placing a single order for 16 kilos of biryani, highlighting the dish’s enduring popularity. Swiggy data shows that in 2025, Indians ordered a total of 93 million biryanis, averaging more than three orders per second.

While biryani led the New Year’s Eve feast, pizza and burgers were close contenders. By 8:30 p.m., more than 2.18 lakh pizzas had been delivered, narrowly beating burgers, which logged over 2.16 lakh orders.

Desserts also featured prominently later in the evening. Rasmalai, gajar halwa and gulab jamun ranked among the top five most ordered sweets around 10:30 p.m., as party-goers rounded out their celebrations.

Individual orders added a human touch to the numbers. A Bengaluru resident ordered 100 burgers in one go, while a customer in Goa picked 39 portions of kebabs, tikkas and other delicacies. Gurugram saw one order for 18 boxes each of brownies and plum cakes, while in Nagpur, a devoted food lover placed over 93 separate orders during the day. In Surat, one customer ordered from 22 different restaurants on December 31 alone.
