Chandigarh, May 21: After Rohit Sharma’s retirement, there is a lot of discussion about who will be the next captain of the Indian Test team. India is to tour England for a five-match Test series next month and the team may be announced in the next few days. According to the India Today report, the Indian team for this tour can be announced on May 24. The report states that there will be a selection committee meeting on Saturday, after which a press conference can also be held.
Who is in the race for captaincy?
The report states that the Indian team can be announced on Saturday at 12 noon. Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are leading in the race for Test captaincy. However, there were also reports that Bumrah has distanced himself from the claim and now Gill and Pant are in the race for captaincy. Due to workload management, it is difficult for Bumrah to play in all five Tests.
India will start the new cycle of WTC
Sky Sports reported that a selector is not in favor of handing over the captaincy to Gill as he believes that Gill has not yet confirmed his place in the Test team. It was suggested that making him the vice-captain would be better for the 25-year-old at this time.
The Indian team will start the next cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) from the England tour itself. Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit and Virat Kohli will not be in this series as all three have said goodbye to the Test format.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the India A team for the two-match series against England Lions. Players like Karun Nair and Ishan Kishan got a place for this, while Gill and Sai Sudarshan were also included in the team for the second Test. It is believed that some new faces can also get a place in the Indian team for the England tour.
