Imphal, April 7: The Manipur government on Tuesday ordered a three-day suspension of internet and mobile data services across five districts following the deaths of two children in a suspected rocket attack. The restrictive measures, effective immediately, cover Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts to manage the deteriorating law and order situation.
The administrative action follows a pre-dawn strike in Bishnupur district that claimed the lives of a five-month-old girl and a five-year-old boy. The victims succumbed to their injuries at a hospital in Imphal after a projectile reportedly struck their home while the family was asleep. Their mother also sustained injuries during the explosion, which occurred at the residence of a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel.
Manipur Home Minister K. Govindas condemned the incident as a “barbaric act” and affirmed that the government would not tolerate such brutality. “The matter is under active investigation, and all necessary steps are being taken to bring those responsible to justice,” the Minister maintained.
In the aftermath of the attack, unrest spread as protesters attempted to storm a CRPF camp and set oil tankers ablaze in Moirang. Local residents in Tronglaobi reported that the projectile hit a bedroom window at approximately 1:03 a.m., triggering widespread panic. Security remains tightened in the region, which has seen recurring ethnic tensions and remains vulnerable due to its proximity to active armed groups.
