Jalandhar, Aug 19— In a tough new step against littering and illegal dumping, the Jalandhar district administration and Municipal Corporation have rolled out an on-the-spot challan system equipped with Point of Sale (POS) machines for immediate fine collection.
The initiative, launched on Independence Day by Mayor Vaneet Dhir, is part of an ongoing campaign to curb unauthorised garbage disposal and strengthen enforcement of solid waste management rules.
Under the new system, sanitary inspectors have been authorised to issue instant challans for violations including open littering, non-segregation of waste, and dumping at unauthorised sites. Each violation will be documented with geo-tagged photographic evidence.
Fines range from ₹500 to ₹50,000, depending on the seriousness of the offence. Officials said violators must pay the penalty immediately through POS machines; failure to do so will result in the matter being forwarded to court under applicable laws.
“Citizens are urged to segregate their domestic and commercial waste properly and hand it over only to authorised municipal sanitation workers. Public participation is crucial in ensuring a cleaner, healthier, and garbage-free Jalandhar,” municipal officials said.
The administration emphasised that cleanliness is not solely the responsibility of the civic body but a shared duty of residents to maintain the city’s environment.
