Jind, Sept 7: A 26-year-old man from Haryana’s Jind district was shot dead in California after an altercation with a local resident, his family confirmed on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Kapil from Barah Kalan village, was working as a security guard in the United States. According to village sarpanch Suresh Kumar Gautam, the incident occurred when Kapil asked a local man not to urinate outside the premises where he was posted. “An argument followed, and the man pulled out a gun and shot Kapil. He died on the spot,” Gautam said.
The victim’s family in Barah Kalan said they were informed about the shooting by a relative settled in the US. They plan to meet the Jind Deputy Commissioner on Monday to request assistance in bringing the body back to India. “We want our son’s body returned home so we can perform his last rites,” a family member said.
Kapil had moved to the United States three years ago, reportedly through the so-called donkey route. His relatives said he paid around Rs 45 lakh to agents who facilitated his journey, which included crossing Panama’s jungles and scaling the Mexico border wall before entering the US in 2022. He was detained by authorities but released after completing legal procedures.
The sarpanch noted that the tragic incident has left the entire village in shock. “Kapil was young, hardworking, and full of dreams. His death is a huge loss for the family and the community,” he mentioned.
