Shimla, April 9 — A day after BJP MP Kangana Ranaut alleged she received a ₹1 lakh electricity bill for her unused Manali residence, the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) issued a clarification, saying her claim was “misleading.”
In a statement, the board said the total amount billed was ₹90,384 — not ₹1 lakh — and that it covered a two-month period, not one as alleged by Ranaut. “The bill issued on March 22 also includes ₹32,287 from the previous unpaid cycle,” a board spokesperson said.
The HPSEBL added that Ranaut has not been paying her bills regularly and that the connected load at her Manali home stands at 94.82 kW — approximately 1,500% more than an average household.
Ranaut had made the allegation during a rally in Mandi on Tuesday, saying, “I got a ₹1 lakh electricity bill for a house where I don’t even live. They have raised bus fares, probe samosas, and embarrass us every day. This is a state that needs rescue from the wolves.”
Reacting to her remarks, the board maintained that such public statements distort facts. “It is incorrect and irresponsible to claim the bill was for just one month,” the spokesperson noted.
