MANSA, May 24 — In a fresh setback to the ongoing trial in the Sidhu Moosewala murder case, Angrez Singh, the first Investigating Officer and a key prosecution witness, died late Friday night after battling a prolonged illness.

Singh, who was posted as the Station House Officer (SHO) at Mansa Sadar police station when the popular Punjabi singer was gunned down on May 29, 2022, played a pivotal role in the initial stages of the investigation. He was among the first officers to reach the crime scene and was expected to provide critical testimony on July 4.

Due to his deteriorating health, Singh had already missed a scheduled court appearance on May 23, citing medical reasons. His death now leaves a significant gap in the prosecution’s case, which has already seen multiple adjournments.

“His passing is unfortunate and could impact the momentum of the trial,” said a senior police official on condition of anonymity.

At the latest hearing, Singh was listed among three main witnesses, alongside Sidhu Moosewala’s father, Balkaur Singh, and police official Sukhpal Singh. The court is now expected to formally acknowledge his death and revise the witness list in the coming days.

Earlier, two eyewitnesses — Gurpreet Singh and Gurvinder Singh — had testified, identifying the shooters, weapons, and vehicles involved in the attack, which marked a major breakthrough in the investigation.

Balkaur Singh remains slated to testify on July 4, and his statement is expected to carry significant emotional and legal weight in the proceedings.

Moosewala, a rising star in Punjabi music and politics, was shot dead in broad daylight in Jawaharke village, Mansa, sparking public outrage and intense calls for justice. His killing has since become one of Punjab’s most high-profile murder cases in recent years.
