Chandigarh, Jan 3: Senior BJP leader Iqbal Singh Lalpura on Saturday condemned the violence reported at a gurdwara in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district and said the National Commission for Minorities has sought a detailed investigation report from the state government.
The incident occurred on Veer Bal Diwas during a religious programme and lecture series organised at the gurdwara to commemorate the sacrifice of the Sahibzadas. According to Lalpura, the event was disrupted by alleged anti-social elements, leading to panic within the religious complex.
“A peaceful religious programme was disturbed by communal elements. This is a serious matter involving the safety of a place of worship,” Lalpura said in a statement.
He said a local resident, Ramnideep Singh, suffered serious injuries during the attack, including damage to one eye.
Lalpura, a member of the BJP’s parliamentary board and former chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), said he had written to the commission seeking action against those responsible.
“This incident amounts to a grave violation of religious freedom, social harmony and constitutional values,” he said, urging an impartial inquiry.
Acting on his complaint, the NCM has written to the Uttar Pradesh government, directing it to submit a comprehensive investigation report and details of action taken against the accused.
“The commission has made it clear that violence or intolerance at any place of worship will be treated with utmost seriousness,” Lalpura said.
He added that district authorities have been instructed to take strict legal action and ensure peace in the area.
“Protecting the sanctity of religious places and maintaining communal harmony are core to India’s constitutional ethos,” Lalpura said. “Swift action is necessary to ensure justice and prevent such incidents in the future.”
