MANDI, Sept. 2 — A sudden landslide struck the Jangambag area of Sundernagar subdivision in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on Tuesday evening, burying two residential houses and leaving several people trapped under debris, officials said.
The incident sent residents fleeing in panic as a portion of the slope collapsed with a loud rumble and crashed into homes at the base. Some families managed to escape, while others were caught under the rubble.
Additional District Magistrate Dr. Madan Kumar confirmed that three individuals had been rescued. “A massive search and rescue operation is currently underway to locate and rescue the remaining missing persons,” he said.
Teams from the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and local police rushed to the site. Officials said the operation was being carried out under difficult conditions due to unstable terrain and the risk of further slides.
Mandi Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan, who is at the site, said all possible measures are being taken. “The safety of the trapped individuals is our top priority. All necessary resources have been mobilised for the rescue operation,” he noted.
Rescue efforts were continuing late into the night, with authorities warning of possible delays as teams navigated hazardous conditions.
