SOLAN, July 21 — Incessant rainfall since last night triggered multiple landslides across Solan district, cutting off key road links and leaving scores of vehicles stranded as muddy water and debris flowed down fragile hillsides.
Major routes including Dharampur-Subathu, Dharampur-Kasauli, Jandauri-Pratha-Nabon, Kunihar-Totu, Waknaghat-Mamlig, and Kasauli-Jangeshu were all severely impacted, with road surfaces buried under layers of soil, uprooted trees, and slush. Long queues of vehicles formed on either side of the blockades, forcing many commuters to either turn back or take long, winding detours through narrow alternate routes.
One two-wheeler rider was caught in a sudden flow of muddy water and debris on the Dharampur-Kasauli stretch after a heavy downpour early Monday morning made a 50-metre segment of the road completely impassable. The incident prompted several travelers to divert via Sanawar to reach Kasauli.
“Continuous rainfall is hampering restoration efforts,” said a local administration official. “We’ve deployed teams to clear the debris, but fresh slides remain a threat.”
Visuals from the affected areas showed streams of brown water gushing across roadways and vehicles stuck amid landslide rubble, underlining the precarious condition of the hilly terrain during monsoon.
Authorities have urged residents and tourists to avoid non-essential travel in the region until conditions stabilize. Efforts to reopen the blocked routes are underway, though officials said the pace of clearance may remain slow as forecasts predict further rainfall over the coming days.
