NEW DELHI, AUGUST 16: Generations of legal minds who shaped India’s constitutional framework have set a benchmark that young lawyers must now carry forward to strengthen the nation’s justice system, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant affirmed during the 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Supreme Court premises. Addressing the national flag hoisting ceremony organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association, CJI Kant pointed out that the journey of the nation requires continuous commitment to democratic values and constitutional duties.
“The journey of a nation does not end with what it has accomplished. Every achievement also brings with it a renewed sense of responsibility and duty. There is much that remains to be done, and many more miles to travel in our journey ahead,” CJI Kant stated while speaking to the gathering of senior judges, lawyers, and court staff.
Reflecting on the historical connection between the legal fraternity and the freedom movement, CJI Kant maintained that key architects of modern India, including Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Motilal Nehru, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Lala Lajpat Rai, used the medium of law to challenge colonial rule. He noted that the Indian independence movement stood out because it questioned the legitimacy of colonial administration through constitutional language, public debates, and legal petitions rather than armed conflict.
Addressing the professional hurdles faced by newcomers, CJI Kant acknowledged that young practitioners encounter steeper learning curves and competitive environments. However, he expressed confidence in their ability to adapt modern technology while maintaining a deep sensitivity toward social equality and public access to justice.
“To our young law graduates and young lawyers, I want to say this: the responsibility that this Bar has carried since the days of the freedom struggle will, before long, rest on your shoulders,” CJI Kant affirmed. He added that the Bench and the Bar remain fully committed to supporting the younger generation through mentorship and meaningful professional opportunities as they navigate their careers.
Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh along with other senior members of the bar body also addressed the occasion, marking the landmark event at the apex court.
