New Delhi, March 16: The suspension of eight opposition members from the Lok Sabha is expected to be revoked this Tuesday following a high-level meeting convened by Speaker Om Birla. The group, consisting of seven Congress members and one CPI(M) representative, was previously suspended for the duration of the Budget Session due to unruly behavior in the chamber.
Sources familiar with the discussions stated that a general consensus was reached among political leaders to restore decorum within the House. The opposition parties have agreed to certain conduct guidelines, including a commitment that members will restrict their movements within the Well of the House and refrain from crossing over to the treasury benches. Furthermore, parties have pledged to avoid tearing papers, climbing on furniture, or utilizing AI-generated posters during protests.
Speaker Birla had earlier maintained that disciplinary actions are a necessary consequence when the dignity of the House is compromised, specifically citing instances of members climbing on tables. The opposition has been consistently urging the Speaker to reconsider the suspensions since the second leg of the Budget Session commenced on March 9.
In a formal communication to party leaders, the Speaker expressed deep concern over the recent use of placards, banners, and inappropriate language. He declared that while the House has a tradition of dignified dialogue, the prestige of the parliamentary democracy was being undermined by the actions of some members.
The resolution to lift the suspensions is seen as a move to ensure the smooth functioning of the remaining session, which is scheduled to conclude on April 2. Government sources affirmed that the focus will now shift back to legislative business under the agreed-upon ethical conduct.
