New Delhi, April 3: The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, early Thursday following a marathon 12-hour debate. The bill cleared the House with 288 votes in favor and 232 against, after all opposition-proposed amendments were rejected by voice vote.
Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the legislation, asserting that India remains the safest place for minorities. “Some members have said minorities are not safe in India. This statement is completely false,” he said. “Even minuscule communities like the Parsis live here with pride. I am also a minority, and we all are living without fear.”
While the ruling NDA maintained that the bill would benefit minority communities, the opposition denounced it as “anti-Muslim,” accusing the government of targeting Waqf properties.
