Patiala, Feb 3: Administrative procedures and final paperwork delayed the release of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia from Nabha Jail on Tuesday. Despite the Supreme Court granting him bail in a disproportionate assets case a day prior, the former minister remained behind bars into the afternoon as his legal team worked to finalize the necessary documentation.
The atmosphere outside the facility grew increasingly charged as Ganieve Kaur, Majithia’s wife, arrived at the premises to receive him. Her arrival coincided with a large gathering of party supporters who had been stationed outside the gates since Monday evening. This latest legal victory follows a previous bail order Majithia secured in a separate case involving the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Counsel for the SAD leader noted that the legal process remained the only hurdle. Damanbir Sobti, Majithia’s lawyer, clarified that the court had not placed any geographic restrictions on his client.
“The state government moved the court to prevent Majithia from entering Punjab, but this request was dismissed,” Sobti said while addressing reporters outside the jail. He added that the team expected the release to conclude shortly once the prison administration processed the bail bonds.
Heavy security remains deployed around the jail perimeter to manage the crowd of workers. Officials noted that the delay was purely procedural, ensuring all court directives were verified before the gates opened.
