Amritsar, January 10: The Civil Lines police in Amritsar have arrested Davinder Singh Verka, a supporter of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, for allegedly obstructing a Vigilance Bureau team during Majithia’s arrest last year, police sources said.

The arrest is connected to the June 25 incident when the Vigilance Bureau took former Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia into custody from his Green Avenue residence in a disproportionate assets case.

Davinder Singh Verka is accused of creating hurdles and disrupting the functioning of the Vigilance Bureau team from Mohali during the arrest operation. However, police officials have not issued any formal statement confirming the arrest so far.

On June 25, the Vigilance Bureau operation witnessed a heavy presence of Akali Dal supporters outside Majithia’s residence. Police had alleged that slogans were raised, threats were issued, and attempts were made to block officials from carrying out their duty.

“The crowd situation had forced the police to put up barricades to ensure the safety of the vigilance team and maintain law and order,” a police officer said.

Following the incident, the Civil Lines police had registered a case against Bikram Singh Majithia and more than a dozen of his associates for obstructing public servants and creating disturbances during an official operation.
