AMRITSAR, 25 June — The Punjab Vigilance Department on Wednesday conducted a raid at the Amritsar residence of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, intensifying an ongoing investigation linked to allegations of drug trafficking.
Officials have not yet disclosed the official grounds for the search, which was still in progress at the time of filing this report. However, sources indicate the operation is tied to a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in which Majithia is an accused.
Majithia was booked in December 2021 under Sections 25, 27A, and 29 of the NDPS Act, which pertain respectively to the use of premises for drug-related offenses, financing illicit drug production, and abetment. The case stems from findings in a 2018 report by the Special Task Force, which alleged that Majithia facilitated international drug smuggling operations between 2004 and 2014.
The senior Akali Dal leader has repeatedly denied the accusations, calling them “a deliberate attempt to tarnish my reputation for political gain.”
“This is not an investigation — it’s persecution. The AAP government is using state machinery to settle scores,” Majithia said in a previous statement.
In March 2025, the Supreme Court directed him to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Patiala on March 17 after the Punjab government submitted that Majithia was evading cooperation. The court underscored the necessity of his “full and timely cooperation” to ensure progress in the investigation.
Despite the high-profile nature of the case, no chargesheet has been filed yet. Majithia continues to assert that the legal actions are politically driven, timed strategically ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
“The timing speaks for itself,” Majithia has said. “They want to weaken the opposition through misuse of agencies.”
