MOHALI, July 19 — A Mohali court on Saturday extended the judicial custody of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a case registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The 49-year-old leader was earlier remanded to 14-day judicial custody on July 6, after the completion of a four-day police remand. The Vigilance Bureau (VB) had arrested Majithia from his residence in Amritsar on June 25 and brought him to Mohali the following day.
Initially, the court granted a seven-day remand on June 26, which was later extended by four more days on July 2. During the remand period, investigators took Majithia to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh and to Delhi to gather evidence in connection with Saraya Industries.
Majithia has challenged the case in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, terming the investigation a “political witch-hunt and vendetta” by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
“This is a clear case of targeting opposition voices,” Majithia said in his petition filed on July 1.
The case pertains to allegations of disproportionate assets and alleged links to financial irregularities involving Saraya Industries. The Vigilance Bureau has not yet filed a chargesheet.
