FEROZEPUR, June 30: A man died on the pitch shortly after hitting a six during a cricket match in Punjab’s Ferozepur district. The deceased has been identified as Harjeet Singh, who collapsed in the middle of the field, moments after executing a powerful shot.
The incident occurred at the DAV School ground, where Harjeet was participating in a local match. A viral video of the incident shows him preparing to face a delivery and striking it cleanly for a six. But just moments after the shot, as he walked to the middle of the pitch, he suddenly went down on his knees and collapsed.
Shocked teammates rushed to his aid and immediately attempted CPR. However, Harjeet did not respond to resuscitation efforts and was declared dead on the spot. The preliminary cause of death is believed to be a heart attack, though an official post-mortem report is awaited.
The local administration has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
The video, which has been widely shared on social media, has drawn messages of grief and disbelief from the cricketing community and beyond. Friends and fellow players remembered Harjeet as a spirited participant and a regular face in local matches.
The incident has once again raised concerns over cardiac health awareness and the importance of emergency medical arrangements during sporting events, even at amateur levels.
