Chandigarh, Sept. 25 — A 62-year-old man from Sector 18 was cheated of ₹3.1 lakh after calling a number he found online for the Sector-19 Government dispensary, police said.
On August 20, victim Mandeep Singh needed to visit the dispensary for a checkup. While searching for the dispensary online, he found a help number and called, but no one answered. Later, he received a callback from a different number claiming to be from the dispensary. The caller said he would register Singh online and sent a link via SMS. Singh was asked to fill out personal details and submit ₹2 through the link. Suspicious, he cut the call.
The next day, Singh discovered that ₹3.1 lakh had been withdrawn from his bank account.
Police have registered a case under the provisions for cheating and criminal conspiracy of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act, at the Sector 17 Cyber Cell police station. The accused are yet to be apprehended.
Authorities have warned residents to verify official contact numbers and exercise caution when sharing personal and banking information online.
