Chandigarh, August 23, 2025 — The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has launched an immediate and hands-on response to the floods affecting the state, deploying eight cabinet ministers to directly oversee relief operations.
Within hours of assessing the situation, the government released ₹2 crore in relief funds and ordered a special Girdawari (crop damage assessment) to ensure farmers receive timely support. “Our priority is not just announcements but being with the people when they need us the most,” Mann said in a statement.
The proactive approach contrasts with other states where crisis management often remains confined to official meetings. Over the past three years, Punjab has invested ₹276 crore in flood-prevention infrastructure, and officials noted its effectiveness during the recent heavy rains. “These measures are no longer just plans on paper; they are protecting lives and property during emergencies,” Mann’s office noted.
Ministers visited affected districts to assess damage firsthand. Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal and Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar inspected the Dhussi embankment along the Sutlej river in Tarn Taran and Ferozepur. They visited villages, listened to residents’ concerns, distributed immediate relief, and assured the public of government support. Hardeep Singh Mundian toured Sultanpur Lodhi, while Dr. Balbir Singh held a review meeting with the Kapurthala administration to monitor relief operations.
The Mann Government emphasized that its approach goes beyond administrative duty to a more humanitarian engagement. A senior official noted, “We do not distribute relief only in front of cameras. Our work is on the ground, away from publicity, because public service is about action, not statements.”
Opposition leaders, the statement added, have largely remained focused on rhetoric, while the Mann Government has demonstrated that effective governance requires visible action in times of crisis. Residents of Punjab have expressed appreciation, stating that the government’s presence during floods has reinforced trust. “A government that stands on the frontlines is what the people need,” said one local resident in Ferozepur.
Beyond immediate relief, the government’s measures have been described as an example of “humane leadership.” Officials and residents agree that the handling of the floods has strengthened public confidence. “At a time when many administrations distance themselves from citizens, our government has once again proven its commitment to the people,” the statement added.
Punjab citizens, reflecting on the government’s prompt response, noted that having leadership that acts decisively during crises is a matter of pride.
