SYDNEY, Feb. 6: Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals, ending a nine-year run in the format. Cricket Australia confirmed his decision on February 6, stating that the all-rounder will now prioritize T20 cricket.
“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold,” Stoinis said. “This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career.”
Debuting in 2015, Stoinis played 71 ODIs, amassing 1,495 runs and taking 48 wickets. His standout performance came in just his second match, when he scored an unbeaten 146 against New Zealand in Auckland in 2017.
He was also part of Australia’s 2023 World Cup-winning squad and was named the team’s ODI cricketer of the year in 2018-19.
Stoinis, originally included in Australia’s squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy, will now require a replacement. His last ODI appearance was during the tour of Pakistan in November.
Australian men’s Head Coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged Stoinis’s contribution, describing him as a “pivotal part of the ODI setup for the past decade” and a “natural leader” who was highly respected within the team.
