Zira, April 20: More than 100 acres of standing wheat crop were reduced to ashes in a major fire across four villages in Zira subdivision of Ferozepur on Saturday, officials said.

The blaze, fuelled by strong winds, tore through fields in Malsian Kalan, Tindwan, Basti Gamewali, and Basti Hajiwali, leaving multiple farmers devastated.

Gurwinder Singh, a farmer from Malsian Kalan, said the fire began near Malle Ke Road around 1 PM and spread rapidly. “One tractor was also damaged in the blaze,” he added.

The fire gutted approximately 20 acres of crop owned by Nachhattar Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Surjeet Singh, and Master Ranjit Singh, 15 acres of Nirmal Singh, and 25 acres of Chanan Singh.

Executive magistrate Harminder Singh visited the site and assured affected farmers of government assistance. “A detailed report is being prepared for compensation from the Punjab government,” he said.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
