MC chief hears objections on Mohali limits expansion

Mohali, Nov 21, 2025: Municipal commissioner Parminder Pal Singh Sandhu on Thursday conducted a public hearing for residents and organisations who have raised objections and suggestions regarding the proposed expansion of the Mohali municipal corporation limits. Officials from the Punjab government were present and will now take a final decision on the proposal.

In October, the state government issued a notification proposing the inclusion of Aerocity, IT City, and Sectors 81 and 82—areas undergoing rapid development—into Mohali MC’s jurisdiction. The move has triggered a mixed response: while some residents expect better civic facilities, others fear increased taxation and inadequate infrastructure readiness.

More than 50 residents and organisations have submitted written objections, officials said. “Most of the complainants objected to the taxes as compared to the services. We listened to the complaints and counselled them about the municipal services,” commissioner Sandhu said after the hearing.

Sources said many objections were linked to the gap between municipal taxes and the quality of services delivered in existing MC areas. Residents argued that several villages merged earlier still lack basic facilities and that issues such as garbage collection remain unresolved. They warned that expanding the MC’s jurisdiction without fixing these gaps could worsen service delivery.
