Mohali, December 27: Punjab Police arrested 15 people and registered 20 FIRs during a large-scale overnight crackdown on illegal mining activities in Mohali district, officials said on Saturday.

Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans said the operation was carried out during the intervening night of December 26 and 27, with simultaneous raids conducted under the jurisdiction of Sohana, Majri and Dera Bassi police stations.

During the operation, police seized heavy machinery and vehicles allegedly being used for unlawful mining, including one earth-moving machine, 14 loaded tippers and two tractor-trolleys.

Hans said the illegally extracted mineral material recovered from various dumping sites has been assessed by the Geology and Mining Department, and further legal and administrative action will follow based on the department’s evaluation.

The SSP added that notices have also been issued to crusher owners and other individuals suspected of involvement in illegal mining operations.

Reiterating a zero-tolerance approach, Hans said the police will continue sustained enforcement drives to curb illegal mining, protect natural resources and ensure strict adherence to the rule of law.
